This Pirates of Penzance is primarily a historical document, part of the Broadway Theater Archive television series. It presents, with some inevitable, tiny technical shortcomings, a live 1980 performance in Central Park, not the 1983 movie of the same name that also starred Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline. Those who remember that film, which had the benefit of retakes and editing, a lavish production budget, and the spaciousness of a Hollywood studio, may find this video less polished. On its own terms, it is nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable.
Advantages of this live performance include a sense of spontaneity, and the feeling of being part of a theatrical audience that is visibly and audibly having a very good time. The (reduced and partly electronic) orchestra is also visible scenery is minimal the onstage pirate boat, excellent for a live production, is no match for what a movie can offer. The voices are uneven, and some of them evoke Broadway more than London. But the performance is well styled, lively, and energetic. I do enjoy Patricia Rutledge, from ages of watching her perform in BBC Keeping Up Appearances as a social climbing civil servants wife. Her skill as a singing actress is every bit as delightful as her portrayal of Hyacinth in that series. As a staged version this is excellent. However, I do remember the film version which was released with Angela Lansbury playing the part of the nurse. Obviously there is more you can do with a filmed version than you can with a staged version. Kevin Klines antics in the film version of "I Am a Pirate King" allowed for much more than you can do on stage, and Tony Azevedo as the policeman with his Keystone Cops gang were highlighted with the camera angles and staging. Saying this, it must be remembered that any performance of Pirates will by nature be performed on a stage, and this is an excellent reference for what is possible on stage.

This is the worst DVD I have ever seen. I love the VHS version and I have been waiting for the Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline to come out on DVD for years. I had a lazer disc of it years ago and loved it. The picture on this DVD is so bad it is unviewable. It is blurry and was obviously done on a home camera. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS. The audio is poor also so it cannot even be used as a CD.

I bought this DVD because of my addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan, and "Pirates" in particular, but I hesitate to recommend it to someone encountering the opera for the first time (not that there are any other better options on the market, regrettably). It is full of energy and great fun but, as other reviewers have noted, the picture quality is often very poor, and, especially in the choruses, the sound is frequently "muddy". Kevin Kline and the other principals who went on to make the later "Pirates" film are all in good voice here (although I cannot understand why George Rose introduced the irritating nasal whine in "I am an orphan boy" here, which he later repeated in the film - there must be some subtle cultural reference that I am missing). Linda Ronstadt seems less secure in her singing than she was in the film, but perhaps that is just the result of a live performance as opposed to multiple takes. I agree with other reviewers that Patricia Routledges performance as Ruth is outstanding, far better than Angela Lansburys in the film. For any G&S fan, that alone is good enough reason to buy the DVD.

Were staging a production of "Pirates" in April 2002, and we have two editions of this score by G. Schirmer. The cheaper one is for the chorus, and has just the choral passages. The more expensive one (listed here) has the complete vocal music and dialogue.
I have seen both, and would rate them at five stars except that the original page plates are a little dirty, introducing some confusing dots and spots.

Im not sure what an earlier reviewer is saying about this score not having the solo stuff. This book has the complete score and dialoge. Ive used it for two productions of POP and it is missing nothing.
Unless this is a different edition than the one I have..but it has the exact same cover and credits so I doubt it.
Not a Music Note in It!

Be aware that this book does not have a single musical note in it! I ordered 30 copies for a production I am directing and when the book came, it is only the dialogue and the lyrics to the music. You can download that much from the internet! I dont know why the other reviewers talk about it being a vocal score. It has no music in it. If you want to get a vocal score, this is not your ticket. Besides, this book is a copy of another book. Amazon says the book is 48 pages long, but the script is only 20 pages and the other pages are blank. I am sending this back and getting the Shirmer edition.

Once again Dover has managed to produce a Piano Vocal score which is a major improvement over the existing editions. While I cant speak for the Scholarly content, and while it doesnt claim to be a "critical edition", it does EXACTLY what a performer wants in a piano vocal score. It is clear and readable and has the words as well as the music. It is also clearly market with measure numbers at the start of each staff and has clear and well marked Major Measure markers throughout. In sum, if you are looking to perform the work, this is the edition to get.
(And if you need a Full Score, the Dover full score is also a very good deal).

I used this score in a production of Pirates at my university, and from the standpoint of a cast member it was excellent. It outlined each part and was easy to read. At any point where scores between production years differ, this handy volume recounts them all with notes as to which part belongs with which year. My only complaints are that it is not ring-bound (regular paperback binding, harder to hold on to/use) and some harmony parts are difficult to pick out because they divide on the page turn and appear at different parts of the page. Other than that, it is a wonderful score and I would recommend it to anyone interested in producing this enchanting operetta.

Where the music dominates the operetta, as in HMS Pinafore, Opera Australia is great. Hobsons reading of "Bright regent of the heavens" is a joy to hear. Everyone has their patter songs down pat. Colette Manns portrayal of Buttercup was odd, but not offensive.
Where the dialogue dominates the music, as in Trial by Jury, Opera Australia alternates between annoying and incomprehensible. Much of the dialogue cannot be heard through the accents. Matching a gold digging plaintiff with Warlows senile judge makes the ending more silly than funny. The libretto seems to suggest the mating a naive plaintiff with a venal judge.

Two great Gilbert & Sullivan productions together on one DVD. This is a great package. Both are well performed, energetic and entertaining. Several of the cast appear in both performances, including Anthony Warlow and David Hobson.
Trail By Jury is brought forward to modern times. I am not generally in favour of this treatment of Gilbert & Sullivan, although I understand the need to make them as accessible as possible to new audiences. Fortunately, the transformation did not distract from the great performances on show. Anthony Warlow manages to maintain a Scottish accent even while singing in his most unique portrayal of the Learned Judge, while David Hobson brilliantly captures the arrogant attitude of the defendant, Edwin.
HMS Pinafore is one of the best productions of the show I have seen, very lively and polished. The one disappointment is Colette Mann as Little Buttercup. With all due respect to her acting ability, her vocals do not stand up in the midst of so many great voices. Perhaps she was included to attract a more contemporary audience.
Opera Australia have once again shown they are probably currently the world leaders in producing DVDs of live Gilbert & Sullivan shows. We can only hope for more to come.
"Poor Little Buttercup," And I Know Why

What with the demise of the DOyly-Carte opera company, we should be grateful for these performances coming from the Australian Opera Company. Unlike so many of their DVD competitors, e.g. the Stratford Canadian productions, they arent mischievously bent, owing to stage director vanity, on distorting the works in question. True, the Gilbert settings have been updated in each of the works here, but the wit of the librettist and the winning music of Sullivan have been maintained, so the mindless changes in time period may be easily overlooked.
Both productions, by and large, are distinguished by excellent voices and competent acting. Warlow, Hobson, Speight, and Wood all do even more than justice to their roles. But still there is one drawback thats unnerving, the casting of Little Buttercup, the woman who wonders why in the first place shes called "Poor" Little Buttercup. I agree with the judgment of numerous previous reviewers on this point. The poverty of Little Buttercup in this production is no mystery. Collette Mann, unable to sing or act the part, has been mind-bogglingly miscast. What, one has to ask, were the casting directors thinking? She is the ungainly spot of mud that compromises the otherwise elegant swan.

For G&S fans, these are terrific productions reasonably priced. The live audience participation makes it seem as if Im there, too. There is all the joy I recall from attending G & S as a child. Gilbert & Sullivan were not about perfection but good fun.

Bought three Blitz boxes for Christmas last year. One for my son-in-law with a gift card in it one each for my then 6th grade and 8th grade grandsons with money in them. They were the hit of the day. Once they opened these gifts, they wanted to stop and solve the puzzles. All other presents had to wait. A bit frustrating for the last one to solve th puzzle, but they just loved them. My daughter has a funny video of the three "boys" on the floor, in their pjs, working intently on the puzzles while some other gifts sat unopened. Will do this again this year for all family members, especially if I can find some different mazes. Great fun gift.

A nice little puzzle. However, the BilzBox may have a flaw, not in design or construction, but in its instructions. I solved the ball matrix in just a few minutes (moderate dexterity required, so maybe for ages 12 & up), however, it would not open. The problem was that the giftor had placed a check on TOP of the plastic drawer, not IN it. This allows the paper check to interfere with the ball motion in the last inch or so, making it very difficult for the push-latch to work. The giftor may not have followed directions to put the check INSIDE the plastic drawer, or maybe the loading instructions were not clear or even non-existant. Put the gift INSIDE the drawer, and all works quite well.

Every Christmas I take a trip down to this little town to celebrate the Yuletide with some family friends. A few years back one of these family friends-- a big puzzle & brain-teaser buff-- gave me a department store gift card... imprisoned in a Bilz box. I took on the challenge of moving the little ball through the maze to the spot where it would fill the gap between the release button and the drawer spring, allowing me to free the gift card from its incarceration. It turned out to be a fun and challenging, yet slightly frustrating experience. It took me several minutes just to get the ball going down one particular corridor... but when it finally did, I knew it was well on its way to "the promised land." It took me about twenty minutes to figure it out the first time round after endless attempts in the interim, however, Id managed to get my time down to just under two minutes before the release switch finally broke from being pushed down a zillion times. Hey, what didja expect from a container thats almost totally plastic?
On my first day of work at a comic-and-collectibles shop after my Christmas break, I showed the owner the Bilz box, and gave him a few suggestions on how it could be used for promotional purposes. My main idea was to toss a $25.00 store gift certificate in it, and hold some sort of drawing where the winner can claim the gift certificate if he/she can solve the Bilz box puzzle within a given period of time. Although he took my idea into consideration, the promotion was never implemented. Oh well, it wasnt the first concept of mine that never got off the ground...
Bottom line: release-button durability notwithstanding, the Bilz box is a neat twist on the giving of money or gift certificates as a holiday or birthday gift. All in all, its a lot better than some silly ol greeting card...

Bought 4 of these for christmas. 2 for the little grandsons, 1 for the big grandson, and 1 for the big, big son. Put $10 and $20 in them. It was the hit of the "present openings". Once they opened these and started trying to get the money out everything else came to a stop. Forget the other presents. They had a ball. I would recommend this product highly.

First of all, what a great comedy!! How many people get sucked into buying a home (thinking its such a great deal) only to find out it will cost them more than buying an expensive home to begin with. I love Tom Hanks and his performance in this film was great once again.

This is a very good early Tom Hanks movie. At times it tries to turn into a movie about relationships, but the best parts are the gags about the house that turns into a nightmare. There are scenes and lines that will have you laughing until you cry. It is definitely worth owning a copy of this on DVD. Its the kind of movie you can watch many times and still enjoy.

I will never understand why this movie was underrated by the critics or anyone. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Just thinking about this movie puts a smile on my face and whenever I need a pick me up or a laugh this is one that I turn to. Tom Hanks and Shelley Long start out as the sweetest, most loving couple, and the trials and tribulations they go through trying to fix up their house would test anyone. Hanks facial expressions and reactions to the problems around him, and Longs attempts to be patient and understanding become hysterical as they struggle to stick together until the house is completed. I could watch this movie once a week and never tire of it, and I laugh until I cry when Hank comes from the kitchen charred and disheveled and when she asks what happened? and he meekly says shaking his head it cant hurt us any more, and then the turkey flies out of the exploding oven and soars through the upstairs bathroom and the popper pops up and Shelly happily says turkeys done. I just bought Peter Sellers The Party - and to me The Money Pit is far funnier. Maybe humor is funniest when we can relate to it or it speaks to us. I love the Money Pit and I thank all those who worked so hard to create that movie and to entertain us.

I rate this CD 2 stars for the 2 good songs that are on this CD. Not that Lil Wayne isnt marketable, its just that hes not that talented at all. You talk over any beat and put a cute little kid with some fake tattoos on his face and people will buy it, but in the end, we got robbed based on media hype and "marketability". You want REAL Hip-Hop? Go to your local club and catch the up and commers who are doing all the right things, but are held down because Hip-Hop has branched out into the mainstream, and guys whos time has come are still in the limelight. Theres no room for progress.
The most annoying thing about this album is that Lil Wayne sounds like he recorded this after just waking up or during a severe case of strep throat. His voice is scratchy and hoarse and it just gives you that feeling that he didnt put any effort into recording his album, yet he wants you to think hes one of the greatest out there today. Did we forget how to rap or something my friend?? Get some pencil and paper and do us all a favor and either come back with something strong or just stay out of the game for good.

Lord knows I tried to listen to this CD 3 times...IT SUUUUUCKS!! And the lyrics are incoherent at best. "I am a martian..." is the most thought provoking lyrics on here. WOW!!! Ive never sipped syrup, but maybe I have to, to understand why this was so popular. And to think its been grammy nominated??? This proves once and for ALL that the Grammys has degenerated into nothing but a popularity contest whoever sells the most CDs that year, no matter about real artistry, gets a best album nomination.

I listened to some Rakim today and to compare this guy to Rakim is laughable, but I give him five stars because I have no idea how he finds time to make his own albums when he is literally featured on at least one song in 78% of albums released in 2008. Im one of those people who thought "Whats the big deal about this lil Payne Lil Wayne or whatever his name is?" But this album is decent.
He is far from the greatest rapper alive or dead. He is no Tupac and no Biggie but he is one of the few rappers around who are keeping Hip Hop barely alive. Along with Kanye West and Nas they might save Hip Hop for the next generation to experience its importance.
The problem I have with Lil Wayne is he sometimes slurs and mumbles his way through some songs, its almost like he doesnt care about the art anymore and hes just in it for the money.
I got the album based on the tracks A milli and Got money. I think theres at least 4 good tracks which could be singles:

4. Comfortable

Happily, for the rest of us, Papps cheeky revisions are generally on the money, and this 1983 film version preserves them with unusual fidelity. The cast, meanwhile, tears into the farcical plot with elan, led by Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, a role perfect for his skill at lampooning masculine bravado (not to mention his underexposed, generally strong singing). Broadway veteran George Rose proves the very model of the modern Major-General Stanley, and Angela Lansbury, added to the films cast for marquee value, again shows her mettle as the ditzy maid, Ruth. There was much controversy over the release and re-broadcast of this version, with Ronstadt playing Mabel. While the rest of the title cast (Kline, Rose, Smith, etc.) were marvelous, Ronstadt was selected to play Mabel for her "star" status at the time - and the raw outlook, that she was a country-western singer, NOT an opera or classical voice. Apparently she had worked for many weeks prior to shooting Pirates in order to enhance and "ready" the soprano she needed to portray Mabel. Not an easy feat, as she is no classical soprano. Through most of the chorus songs, and her solos, her lyrics are quite muddy, and you will notice during the round of Poor Wandering One her inevitable country twang seeps in, but is ALMOST rescued by a genuine sweeping soprano lyric.
However, her redemption at the ending of Poor really gives you chills, a well done orchestrated coloratura she nails - as Ive never heard ANY prior or latter version out do what she was required to accomplish as Mabel. Those incredible licks she "teases" with the piccolo, and up to the encore high F at the very end.
As everyone else has previously commented, Kevin Kline was masterful as the bumbling Pirate King. Kline agreed to fulfill this role in his essence of once again returning to the Broadway stage in effort to create something broad, comical, and physical in humor. And that feat he certainly accomplished. Especially the musical scene in It Really Doesnt Matter. His facial expressions, and running out of breath as he "faints"....priceless. Lansbury was equally wonderful as the long-repressed Ruth, secretly in love with her ward Frederick....alas.
The huge disappointment with the CD release....it is not Lansburys voice you hear as Ruth, but actress Estelle Parsons, whom Lansbury replaced for the film version. Her lyrics are even muddier than Ronstadts and not nearly as delightful as Lansburys voice.
But overall, I highly recommend this movie for ANYONE. Ronstadt and Smith have undeniable romantic chemistry together, and George Rose and Kevin Kline play marvelously off each other during the Major General song.

I love Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and most of all, The Pirates of Penzance. This rendition captures all the comic enthusiasm G&S could ask for. The sets keep the stage performance feel, with a wider scope. Of course the main glory of this production is the fabulous performances, especially that of Kevin Kline, who is the perfect Pirate King. Linda Ronstadt proves her abilities in the difficult singing role of Mabel, and Rex Smith is a charming young Frederick, balancing his innocence and sense of duty. George Rose is a marvelous major general and Angela Lansbury does quite well as the deceptive nurse-turned-pirate Ruth. All in all, it is completely entertaining. The singing is wonderful, the scenes are lovely, and the little liberties taken with the plot (such as the storming of the theatre playing another G&S production) only add the the fun. This VHS version is far superior in sound and filming to the stage film available on DVD. It should definitely be put on DVD.
BE WARNED: NOT THE DVD ADVERTISED

Potential buyers should be warned that this is not a DVD version of the made-for-film production that includes Angela Landsbury in the cast, though her name certainly appears on the box cover in the advertisement, the product description, and the reviews. It appears that none of the reviewers actually own a DVD copy of this film, and are therefore commenting on a different production than the one being sold (which I already own). As I remember, the production being sold here has sound issues, and the volume fades in and out. Nonetheless, "Hyacinth Bucket" gives a very strong performance as the foolish nursery maid, and the production has other appealing features to collectors.

There is a lot of confusion in the reviews of this movie, and the reason is simple, there are 2 films with he same name and almost the same cast. There is a version which is the film of the broadway stage show, which I have not seen, but lots of people who have say its pretty horrible (the film and sound, not the actual broadway production which most people think was excellent). Then there is another version which is made on a soundstage with simple sets. The later version is, in my opinion, excellent. The singing is great, the acting is great (in this style), and the cast looks like there are having a great time. So there you have it, if you see a bad review, it is probably the film of the stageshow, and if you see a great review, it is probably a review of the soundstage version.
Now for the down side, the good verion (which you can pick by the fact it has Angela Lansbury playing Ruth), is at the time of writing this review not availbale on DVD. So, if you get a DVD it will be the crappy version. You can get the good version on VHS.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot.
